Wedding invitation wording: 12 examples you can copy and make your own

7 min read · Updated 2026-11-27

The words on an invitation do two jobs: they invite, and they tell people what to expect. The best ones are short, warm and clear about the day, the time and the place. Here are twelve examples, from very traditional to relaxed, and a simple structure you can follow when you write your own. You can paste any of them into a digital card and change the names.

The structure that always works

  1. Who is inviting: the families, or the couple, in your own order.
  2. The invitation itself: one warm sentence that asks people to celebrate with you.
  3. The names of the couple.
  4. When and where: the day, the time of each function and the venue.
  5. How to reply: a number, or a reply button on the card.

Traditional wording

"With the blessings of our elders and the grace of God, we joyfully invite you to the wedding of our children, Priya and Aman. Your presence and your blessings will make the occasion complete."

"Together with their families, Priya and Aman request the honour of your presence at their wedding celebrations. We look forward to welcoming you."

"Mr. and Mrs. Sharma invite you to share in the joy of the wedding of their son Aman with Priya, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verma."

Modern and warm wording

"We are getting married, and we would love you to be there. Come for the music, stay for the food, and help us start our life together."

"Two people, two families, one big celebration. Priya and Aman are tying the knot, and every one of you is part of the story."

"After all these years, we said yes. Join us on 14 February to celebrate with us."

Short wording for a card with details below

"Priya and Aman are getting married. All the details are here."

"Save the date: 14 February. The full invitation is one tap away."

"You are invited to celebrate with us. Functions, venue and reply: all on the card."

Wording for each function

Haldi: "Come in yellow, and bring your sense of fun. We start at 11 AM." Sangeet: "An evening of music and dance: wear something sparkly. Dinner follows." Wedding: "The ceremony begins at the muhurat at 7:30 AM. Please be seated by 7:15." The functions guide explains what each one is.

What to leave out of the main text

  • Long lists of relatives: put them on a second page or in a separate section of the card.
  • Directions to the venue: a map button is clearer than a paragraph.
  • Dress code and parking: give them a short line of their own so nobody has to hunt for them.

Questions

How long should wedding invitation wording be?

Two or three sentences for the invitation itself. Everything else, like the schedule and the venue, belongs in its own part of the card, not in the opening words.

Should I put both families' names?

It depends on your family's custom. Many couples list the families in a separate section with their blessings, which keeps the opening short.

Can I write the invitation in Hindi or another language?

Yes. A card can hold any text you type, so you can write the invitation in your own language and keep the dates and the map button clear.
